Losing your hair in any capacity is an upsetting experience. For many people, hair is an important part of their identity, and losing hair on your head can feel like losing a part of who you are. There are different types of hair loss, temporary shedding which can happen seasonally or during hormonal changes, such as postpartum and menopause, or permanent hair loss. But how do you know which type of hair loss you are experiencing? This article will discuss the hair growth cycle which explains the three phases of hair growth, as well as how to distinguish between seasonal hair shedding and permanent hair loss.

Understanding the hair growth cycle

The hair growth cycle can be broken down into three phases, the first phase, named the anagen phase is where the hair follicle develops a hair fibre, this active phase results in the new hair shaft appearing on the skin, and it can take several years to appear. The second phase is called catagen, this lasts a couple of weeks and has been described as the transitional phase, where the hair cycle moves from active to dormant. This transitional period sees the hair diameter reduced by around one-sixth, at this point, the hair is fully formed, women who experience hair shedding of fully formed hairs can feel a significant difference, their hair will feel thinner and look more sparse. This is common for postpartum women, or people who have severe stress, vitamin deficiencies or certain illnesses. The final stage is called the telogen phase, this is where the hair follicle is dormant, around 10-15% of all hairs on the body are in this phase, this period can last serval weeks for eyelash hair but almost a year for scalp hair.

Seasonal hair shedding vs permanent hair loss

Hair shedding is a natural process that occurs throughout the year, but it can become more noticeable during the autumn and winter months. This seasonal increase in hair loss is often caused by several factors, including reduced sun exposure, lower temperatures, and changes in humidity levels.

During the warmer months, the hair growth cycle tends to be in the more active, anagen phase. The increased sunlight exposure during spring and summer stimulates this growth phase, leading to healthier and thicker hair.

However, as the seasons transition to autumn and winter, the amount of sunlight decreases, and temperatures drop. These environmental changes can signal the hair follicles to enter the telogen phase, which is the resting phase of the hair growth cycle. During this phase, hair growth slows down, and hair strands are more likely to shed. This is why many people notice an increase in hair shedding during the colder months.

The change in humidity levels can impact the scalp and hair health. Lower humidity can lead to a drier scalp, which may contribute to increased hair shedding. The good news is seasonal hair shedding is not permanent. Soon the hair follicles will re-entre the active growth phase (anagen) and new hair fibres will begin to grow.

Permanent hair shedding can be caused by many different factors and can't be confirmed as permanent until serval months have passed. The most common cause is age, production of hormones linked to hair growth can slow down as we age and mild to moderate permanent hair loss can be observed. If you have noticed a difference in your hair thickness over six months and feel uncomfortable with the change you could speak to a professional, who may be able to prescribe lotions/medications which can slow down the hair loss but unfortunately there is no definite cure for permanent hair loss.

Understanding Hair Loss

Understanding these seasonal patterns can help individuals take better care of their hair. For instance, using moisturising hair products, protecting the scalp from harsh weather, and maintaining a healthy diet can mitigate some of the seasonal effects of hair shedding. This type of hair shedding is temporary but if you feel your confidence is affected there are many cost-effective products which can help you manage the look of thinner hair while transitioning between the seasons.

Permanent hair shedding is more difficult to overcome as the hair follicles are not expected to return to the anagen-active phase, these changes can be more upsetting. However, slowing down the process or using products which provide an instant addition of hair volume can help you feel like yourself again while you adapt and accept these changes in your appearance.
