What is the biggest problem with messy bun hair extensions?
The biggest problem with messy bun hair extensions that reaches our customer service team is that the buns can be too big or too heavy for some women.
As our messy bun scrunchies are quite large and voluminous, they may be too big to securely fit on some women’s heads.
Our messy bun scrunchies weigh 54 grams (Flicky) / 64 grams (Curly). As the weight is concentrated in one area, some women may find them too heavy on their heads.
Who isn’t suitable for a messy bun hair extension?
Women with particularly thin and/or short hair may not be suitable for a messy bun hair extension.
One reason why you may not be suitable for a messy bun scrunchie is If your hair is so short and/or thin that you cannot create a small bun or ponytail with your natural hair. If this is the case, the bun extension will have nothing to secure itself onto.
Another reason why you may not be suitable for a messy bun extension is if your hair is particularly thin and prone to breakage. This is because the weight of the bun extension pulling on your natural hair could cause tension damage.
How to correctly install a messy bun hair extension:
Correctly installing your messy bun hair extension will make a huge difference in how secure it feels and how well it fits into your natural hair.
Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to install your messy bun scrunchie, perfectly:
Step 1: Tie your hair up
First, gather all of your hair away from your face and neck, holding it up at the top of your head. Now your hair is in a high ponytail, tie your hair up or continue to wrap it into a small bun at the top of your head.
Top tip: Keeping your hair loose and pulling out a few strands will help elevate the look into a ‘perfectly imperfect’ messy bun.
Step 2: Install the Messy Bun
Next, place your hands inside the scrunchie bun and place it over your natural hair ponytail/bun. You can leave it just placed over, or twist it over the bun until it is more taut - depending on how full or voluminous you want your messy bun to be.
Top tip: There is no right or wrong way when it comes to installing your messy bun - have it as loose or tight as you want it to be.
Step 3: Secure and accessorise your bun
Finally, once your messy bun scrunchie is installed, make it as secure as you need it to be. Then, if you’d like, give your bun some personality by accessorising with scrunchies, ribbons, clips or any other hair accessory you fancy!

How to make your messy bun hair extension fit better and feel more secure:
If you struggle with your messy bun scrunchie being too big or too heavy, it may help to invest more time into ensuring that it is securely installed in your natural hair. This should make your bun extension fit and feel better:
- Double or triple tie the messy bun scrunchie around your natural hair
- Pin the messy bun extension into the base of your natural hair, using hairpins
- Spray around the base of your natural hair with hairspray, to create texture for hairpins to grip onto
- Backcomb around the base of your natural hair, to create texture for hairpins to grip onto
- Install a small hair donut and tie the messy bun scrunchie around the donut, pinning and securing the extension into that (rather than your natural hair)
