If your hair is dry and brittle or isn't growing as much as you would like, your hair might not be the healthiest it can be. A lot of factors to unhealthy hair can actually be the environment such as air pollution or the type of water you're washing your hair with! There are even different foods we can add into our diets to add extra nutrition and shine to our hair.
We will get into three different things you can do to increase your hair health without having to spend much money or won't take too much time out of your day. Let's keep our hair healthy together!
Hair Health Tip Number One: Get a water filter!
Now water can actually have lots of effects on the hair that you might not have ever thought about.

Hard water has a build-up of minerals in it that leave a film over your hair stopping moisture from getting to your hair and therefore leading to hair damage. Hard water can even change the curl type for curly hair due to the hair having little moisture! The mineral deposits will eventually leave your hair dry and brittle and prone to breakage or sometimes it can even lead to hair loss. To prevent damaged hair by hard water getting a shower water filter could solve your problems. Soft water isn't as damaging to the hair, it can just make your hair a bit greasy or flat so to combat this use a volumising shampoo and a light conditioner.
These shower filters have small mineral balls inside that will make the water softer and healthier for your hair. Over time your brittle hair will regain moisture once the film has left the hair.
Hair Health Tip Number Two: Massage, Massage!
You heard that right. Now a few minutes of massaging your hair can go a long way and improve your scalp health! The reason we say to massage your scalp is so that you can promote blood flow to the hair follicle. Doing so will promote hair growth due to the fact it is being stimulated and will even promote new hair growth resulting in thicker hair.
When massaging your hair you can do it with dry hair or wet hair. A good time to massage your scalp is just after the shower. This is because your head is likely to be still warm from the water meaning your blood vessels are wider therefore increasing the amount of blood to the scalp. People with hair loss issues or thin hair have seen a difference when starting to massage their scalp.

How many times should I massage my head? How long should I massage for?
Start off by giving your scalp a massage twice a day for 10-20 minutes. This will stimulate your follicles a lot to start with. Whilst you're starting you also just want to massage your hair with just your fingers or a scalp massage brush, leave the oil for now. We want to get your scalp used to having a regular massage. A healthy scalp = healthy hair.
After about two weeks of massaging your scalp regularly, you can start using a hair oil. A known hair oil to help promote hair growth is the infamous rosemary oil. Now if you want to use rosemary oil you have to make sure you are using a diluted solution. Using pure rosemary oil can actually cause the opposite desired effect and may cause hair loss due to the oil being so strong. Alternatively, you can use an oil from Hair Syrup called Rapunzel, which is made to promote increased hair length. Not only will oiling your hair promote hair growth it will also make your hair shine. If you start using hair oil I can say from personal experience you will feel the difference; it will leave your hair soft and silky.
Top Tip: Double shampoo your hair when rinsing out your hair oil. This will prevent product buildup on your scalp and increase the healthy growth of your hair
Hair Health Tip Number Three: Take Collagen Supplements
Collagen is a key component of healthy hair. The human body creates its own source of collagen however each person will create a different amount of collagen and over the years our bodies reduce less and less collagen.
You can take collagen supplements to boost your body's collagen production and this will help your skin to increase in elasticity and your hair to be stronger. This is a supplement you can take on a daily basis and results for healthier hair are normally noticed around 3 months after you start taking it. If you have fragile hair increasing your intake of collagen could improve the strength of your hair and reduce any hair breakage.
You don't have to take hair growth supplements. There are some foods that contain different vitamins that are an essential nutrient your body needs to produce collagen:
- Eating fish can provide a lot of collagen and marine collagen is said to be absorbed easily into the human body
- Bone broth. Cooking up a bone broth will help extract the collagen from the bones and will be super tasty and yet good for your skin and hair
- Eating foods rich in vitamin C such as berries and citrus fruits can help your body make more collagen as the body needs vitamin C to create collagen. 100g of raw broccoli provides over twice your daily value of vitamin C!
If you want to double up on your collagen you can use some collagen hair products.
You can use a collagen hair mask or a collagen scalp treatment. Collagen reduces inflammation of the scalp and promotes blood flow. So one of there hair products may work well for your if you have sensitive or irritated skin on your scalp.
