Keep ReadingOur lovely Stranded customer, Katie, tagged us unexpectedly in a TikTok video. You can watch the video here. We were so pleased to hear Katie's feedback on the Hairline Fillers but we were also interested to find out more about her hair-thinning experience. Stranded: Can you share with us your experience with hair thinning?
Katie: My hair has always been very fine, even from a young age. However, I had a good amount of hair, despite it being thin. It was also quite healthy and strong as a child/teenager. Over the last 5-7 years I started to notice that my hair was falling out, especially in the shower. I think my hair does grow but then it seems to break so I have a lot of strands that look like they are half there, broken halfway down. At the top of my hair, I do think my hair sometimes looks healthy and shiny, but towards the end, it's more dry and brittle.
Stranded: How has hair thinning affected your daily routine or confidence?
Katie: I can honestly say that I have not worn my hair down for around 5 years as it is now so thin, that it feels like it's see-through. My hair is up every day. I have learnt to style my hair up so that it doesn't look too thin, however, the idea of wearing it down is absolutely terrifying. My hair confidence is so low that I also cannot face going to a hairdresser as I am so ashamed of how my hair looks.
Stranded: Have you noticed any specific triggers or patterns related to your hair thinning?
Katie: I believe 2 things. 1 - that my hair thinning may be genetic as my mum also has incredibly thin hair and 2 - I am diabetic and on medication. I believe this to have contributed to the hair loss, although I cannot be sure. The timelines seem to add up too. I have also lived in the Middle East for many years before Malaysia and the water quality there may have affected my hair.
Stranded: What steps have you already taken to address or manage your hair thinning?
Katie: I have tried rosemary oil, and I have also been to a hair specialist to do various treatments. I do think that helped, but the staff were so pushy and always trying to upsell more and more products that it just became uncomfortable so I stopped going. The treatments were already expensive. I have also tried various serums and treatments such as the Kerastase hair fall serum, The Ordinary hair peptide serum and probably much more.
Stranded: Are there any hair care products or treatments you've tried that have worked well for you?
Katie: Not yet
Stranded: How do you feel about discussing your hair concerns with a hairdresser?
Katie: As mentioned above, I haven't been to a hairdresser for years as I am too ashamed. They would be able to cut my hair in one cut and I feel like I would be judged.
Stranded: Are there any particular hairstyles or hair care practices that you've found helpful?
Katie: I just wear my hair up in a kind of twist with a small claw clip. Always up, never down. I am dreaming of a day when I can wear my hair down again.
Stranded: What made you decide to try the Stranded Hairline Fillers?
Katie: I tried the Hair Fillers because I saw my friend Monica post about them on her TikTok (we went to uni together) and so I clicked through to check out the website. I felt that the prices were reasonable, so I purchased them. I was a bridesmaid for my best friend and I wanted the hairdresser to actually have some hair to work with and the fillers worked amazingly. My hair looked incredible and the colour match was spot-on.
Stranded: What was your first impression when they arrived?
Katie: My first impression was that I was really impressed. They were packaged beautifully. The hair itself was soft and incredibly easy to style.
Stranded: How did they make you feel when they were clipped in?
Katie: I felt like “me”. The me I used to be when I had fuller hair. I felt like I finally looked how I was supposed to look. I felt confident in my hair finally.
Stranded: Have they changed what is possible with your hair?
Katie: They have absolutely changed what is possible with my hair, I can finally have some beautiful waves, loose and not always tied back. But also if I want to create a beautiful updo they make my hair look fuller. They are amazing.
It was super insightful for us to hear about Katie's experience with hair thinning. A massive thank you to Katie for being so open and honest about her hair-thinning experiences. We appreciate her courage in sharing such a personal journey. We have learnt how difficult hair thinning can be to deal with, not just in terms of appearance but also the emotional toll it takes. Through our Q&A, Katie has shed light on the struggle that goes far beyond just how your hair looks. She mentioned feelings of shame and the fear of people noticing how thin her hair was, which is equally challenging. We believe discussing these often-overlooked aspects is inspiring and helps others who may be facing similar challenges feel less alone. Thank you, Katie, for your invaluable contribution and for helping to break the stigma surrounding hair thinning.
