The curls in synthetic fibres can drop over time, despite the memory technology aspect of synthetic hair extensions they often need to be revived to keep the style looking fresh.
Challenges faced in maintaining curls in synthetic hair extensions
Maintaining curls in synthetic hair extensions can be challenging due to the lack of natural oils that help hold the curl, the risk of heat damage, and potential tangling or frizz. However, with the right techniques and products, it is possible to keep synthetic curls looking great for an extended period.
Using these specific techniques designed for synthetic hair is key;
1. Use a temperature-controlled heated tool
Heat is needed to mould the synthetic fibre into your desired style. A temperature-controlled heated tool will enable you to put the maximum amount of heat on the synthetic hair extensions without damaging the fibres.
2. Use a hair extension hanger
A hair hanger will make the task of maintaining your curls much easier, with both hands free to wrap, hold and secure the curls, making the finished style will be much better.
3. Allow the heated tool to warm up
Allow your heated curler to warm up to the maximum temperature of 180 degrees before curling. Starting the curling process of the hair too early will mean the curlers are not hot enough to create a fully formed curl, and this will result in uneven curls.
4. Wrap the hair extension and hold
Wrap the hair around your curler and hold for the same amount of time for each section. Count the seconds to create identical curls that look infallible throughout the extension. We'd recommend between 5-10 seconds.
5. Pin the curls
Do not allow the curls to drop straight after they have been curled, gravity will undo the curling process more quickly, the curl needs to be kept in position for the style to embed, use a hair grip to hold the curl in place.
6. Allow the synthetic hair to completely cool
Once all of the hair is curled and pinned allow it to cool for a minimum of ten minutes, this will provide longer-lasting curls.
7. Do not over-brush once curled
A regular hairbrush will undo the curls which have been created. It is better to use a wide-toothed comb or a specially designed hair extension brush to gently blend the curls, this will also prevent breakage and maintain the style.
8. Do not sleep in the hair extensions
It's important to remove the synthetic hair extensions at night to maintain the shape and texture, sleeping in the extensions can matt and tangle the curls which can be difficult to rectify.
I can't use heat on my synthetic hair extensions
Maintaining the curls in synthetic hair extensions can be done with or without heat. If your curly hair extensions are not heat-resistant we recommend using heatless curlers, which are readily available online or can be improvised by using a long sock.
Lightly spritz the hair with a leave-in conditioner, then twist the synthetic hair around the shop-bought heatless curler or sock and leave overnight. The curls will not be as defined as a heated method of curling but it will provide some volume to limp extensions.
Final Touch
Now your extensions are perfectly revived with bouncy curls there are a few product recommendations we'd suggest to complete the look. Firstly spitz the synthetic hair with a light hairspray for added hold, and secondly use a very small amount of serum at the ends of the extensions to smooth any brittle ends.
