Can Clip-In Extensions Be Weaved In?
There is a huge range of hair extensions out there with a multitude of different prices. Due to some extensions being on the pricey side, you may want to see how you can use your extensions in more than one way to save yourself some money. There are many different types of extensions and many can be multi-purpose. You can, for example, use clip-in extensions to create a ponytail extension or a clip-in extension to create a bun.
All extensions have been made for their specific purposes and not all can be used in a multi-use way. In this blog, we will delve into a common question. Can clip-in extensions be weaved in? Or is there a better alternative to homemade hair extensions?
In a short answer
In short, yes. Technically clip-in extensions can be woven into your natural hair. Clip-in extensions come in pre-cut sizes so you can get different widths of wefts depending on your needs. The clips on clip-in hair extensions are usually attached just with cotton and they are normally sewn on. Therefore, to remove the clips you can simply cut them off and then you are left with a weft of hair.
The Conventional Wisdom
Hair care professionals and stylists usually discourage weaving clip-in extensions into natural hair for several reasons. Clip-in hair extensions are made to be taken out and cause less harm to your hair by being easy to install and remove, whenever you want. Clip-in extensions aren’t made to have the same longevity as semi-permanent extensions. Therefore, if you’re planning to sew in your clip-in extensions you have to remember that the product won’t maintain its quality as well as a product that is specifically made to stay in the hair for a longer period of time.

Synthetic Hair Extensions:
If you’re planning on weaving in synthetic extensions, remember, you won’t be able to wash your hair as you normally would due to the fact the extensions will dry differently and won’t blend seamlessly with your natural hair as synthetic hair can not be styled the same way human hair can be. You are also not meant to wash synthetic hair often as it doesn't need to be. Over time, even with high-quality synthetic fibres, quality will deteriorate quicker than expected due to the extensions being used for an alternative purpose than they were manufactured for.
When using hot tools, such as a straightener or curling iron to maintain the original style, set them to a low setting to avoid damaging the synthetic hair. Keep the tool moving to ensure even heat distribution and reduce the risk of melting the fibres.
Human Hair Extensions :
If you were planning on sewing in a human hair clip-in extension, these can be styled the same as your human hair. However, again these weren’t designed to be semi-permanently attached to the head. They may not be as sturdy as normal weft hair extensions. When using hot tools, such as a straightener or curling iron to maintain the original style, set them to a low setting to avoid damaging the synthetic hair. Keep the tool moving to ensure even heat distribution and reduce the risk of melting the fibres.
Difference between Weft hair extensions and Clip-in extensions:
The lace strip that the clips are attached to on clip-in hair extensions are wider than a normal weft band. This larger lace band may get in the way when sewing in and make the hair look bulky and not flush to the head. Most wefts of hair come as human hair, due to the fact having synthetic hair sewn in is not a common option.

Uneven distribution: Due to clip-in extensions having a thicker lace band at the top, ensuring the hair is gathered together, weaving this in may cause uneven distribution of the hair leading to poor blending. Clip-ins aren't as flexible as a single weft so weaving them in may cause unnecessary tension and maybe even hair loss.
A more permanent solution
If you want a semi-permanent hair extension solution, getting extensions professionally fitted in a salon is the healthiest and safest option. Though some extensions can be multipurpose you don't want to damage your hair. Sometimes the cost of getting professionally fitted hair is better than a budget-friendly option that may leave you with permanent hair damage. Opting for a professional weave, tapes or bonds will give you your desired look and maintain quality much longer than a synthetic weave will.
Non-permanent but affordable hair extension option
If you don't really want to spend the money getting salon-fitted hair extensions but like wearing extensions often, seamless human hair extensions could be a great compromise for you!

The seamless human hair clip-in extensions have a very thin silicone base strip making them lighter and more natural looking. Good quality human hair is light on the head meaning there won’t be much tension on your hair follicles when wearing the extensions often. Just make sure you are teasing your hair and placing them in slightly different places each time to give your hair a bit of break as prolonged tension is not healthy for your hair. If you like the idea of this option we have a great selection of seamless human hair extensions you can explore!
TOP TIP: Do NOT sleep in any clip-in extensions. This causes serious tension and potential serious hair loss. Protect your hair!
To summarise:
- To summarise, yes you can weave clip-in hair extensions into your hair. It is possible but it comes with a few risks that you should consider before going into uncharted territory.
- REMEMBER! Clip-in hair extensions will not have the same lifespan as semi-permanent hair extensions as they are manufactured differently.
- The safest and healthiest option is to get semi-permanent extensions fitted by a professional.
- Seamless Human Hair extensions are a great compromise if you want hair that will last a long time and cause less tension
